Vietnam accelerates preparations for 6G technology development

Vietnam is accelerating its preparations for the development and deployment of 6G telecommunications technology. Building on the experience gained from 4G and 5G networks, the country aims to reduce the time required to research, master, and commercialize next-generation mobile networks.

The Ministry of Science and Technology has established a steering committee to coordinate 6G research and development. This initiative seeks to allow Vietnam to participate in international standard-setting activities from an early stage and develop a deployment strategy tailored to the nation's specific conditions. Nguyễn Anh Cương, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Telecommunications Authority, noted that 6G requires global cooperation among countries and businesses to ensure infrastructure interoperability.

As of early 2026, Vietnam had deployed over 40,000 5G base stations, covering approximately 90% of the population. While most infrastructure is established, about 250 stations utilize equipment designed and manufactured by domestic companies. By 2030, Vietnam aims to provide 100% fiber optic access with speeds of at least 1 Gbps, achieve 99% 5G coverage, and be prepared for 6G network testing.
