Vietnam addresses nuclear power workforce shortages

Vietnam is addressing critical human resource shortages required for its long-term nuclear power development. Under Decision No. 1012/QD-TTg, the Ninh Thuan 1 nuclear power plant will require approximately 1,920 personnel, while Ninh Thuan 2 will need about 1,980 by 2033 and 2035, respectively.

Decision No. 893/QD-TTg aims to ensure that by 2030, all state management personnel at central and local levels are fully trained. Furthermore, at least 50% of the staff at the national radiation and nuclear safety regulatory agency must possess the skills necessary for legislation, inspection, and safety oversight.

Despite these mandates, the Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute (VINATOM) faces significant hurdles. The institute currently has only about 10 experts capable of teaching nuclear-related subjects, most of whom are approaching retirement age. Training programs also struggle with insufficient specialized facilities and equipment. To overcome these domestic limitations, Vietnam is looking toward international cooperation, including partnerships with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and established nuclear institutions abroad, to train and dispatch officials for specialized internships and expertise.
