Vietnam addresses rising domestic and generational family conflicts

Vietnam is seeing a rise in discussions regarding domestic and familial tensions, ranging from physical and mental abuse to digital-age conflicts between parents and children.

In Ha Tinh province, authorities are working to implement the 2022 Law on Domestic Violence Prevention and Control. While reported cases of domestic violence in the province have trended downward—from 58 cases in 2023 to 37 in 2024—officials note that many instances of mental abuse, such as insults and financial control, remain unreported due to social stigma. To combat this, the province has established various community models, including 21 prevention models, 69 sustainable family clubs, and 44 community hotlines.

Simultaneously, social media has become a focal point for generational conflict. A large online group titled “Children Hate Parents,” which has grown to nearly 50,000 members, has raised concerns among parents. The group serves as a space where adolescents express frustrations regarding family expectations and perceived lack of understanding. Experts and parents warn that such anonymous spaces can become toxic environments that amplify negative emotions rather than resolving underlying family issues.
