Vietnam advances education reform: new school-year plan and university merger to strengthen law training

President and General Secretary To Lam met with education officials on 15 June to prepare the 2026‑2027 school year. He called for a shift from “education management” to “education development,” stressing the need for sufficient teachers, facilities, and equitable digital resources. The leader highlighted persistent shortages of staff, inadequate infrastructure, high tutoring costs and uneven implementation of digital tools, and ordered measures such as converting surplus government buildings into schools, ensuring every locality with students has teachers, and tightening responses to school violence.

On 16 June Vice‑Premier Lê Tiến Châu attended the ceremony merging the Northern Law College into Thai Nguyen University. He presented the Prime Minister’s decision, describing the merger as a key step in consolidating Vietnam’s higher‑education network, creating a new legal‑studies strength, and fostering research, policy advice and AI‑enabled teaching. The initiative aims to concentrate resources, expand regional development programmes, and increase access for disadvantaged communities while bolstering the university’s role as a national research and innovation hub.
