Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787 returns to Munich after takeoff incident FAST-MOVING
A Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, operating flight VN34 from Munich to Hanoi, was forced to return to Munich Airport on August 15, 2026, following a technical incident during takeoff.
Reports indicate the aircraft experienced an unusually long takeoff roll, rotating late and overrunning the end of runway 26L. The aircraft reportedly sustained a tailstrike and overran the runway by approximately 120 meters, kicking up a large cloud of dust. After takeoff, the crew entered a holding pattern at approximately 9,000 feet for about 90 minutes to dump fuel and reduce the aircraft's weight before attempting a return landing.
During the landing, the aircraft sustained damage to its tires and landing gear, with reports of smoke appearing from the left main landing gear. The aircraft was unable to taxi off the runway under its own power and had to be towed to a hangar. Munich Airport temporarily closed the northern runway to facilitate cleanup and repairs. All passengers and crew members were reported safe and were transferred to the terminal via bus. Authorities, including the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation, are investigating the cause of the incident.
