Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787 overruns Munich runway during takeoff

An interim report from the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) has revealed new details regarding a Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787-9 takeoff incident at Munich Airport on August 15. Flight recorder data indicates that repeated braking commands were applied during the takeoff roll, specifically involving the left-side brake pedals.

These braking events occurred shortly after the takeoff roll began and again just before the aircraft attempted to rotate. As a result, the aircraft failed to reach its calculated rotation speed of 175 knots, instead lifting off at approximately 163 knots after overrunning the runway and entering a grass area. During the excursion, the aircraft's tail and main landing gear struck 20 parts of the runway's approach-lighting system, causing substantial damage to the fuselage and tires.

Investigators have not yet determined whether the braking was caused by pilot error or a technical malfunction. The crew, carrying approximately 271 to 290 people, opted to abort the flight to Hanoi and return to Munich. After dumping 62 metric tons of fuel and performing inspections, the aircraft landed safely. A final report is expected in approximately one year.
