AI chatbots show ability to identify foreign propaganda

Research indicates that AI chatbots are demonstrating a significant ability to identify and reject foreign propaganda. In a study conducted between December 2025 and July 2026, researchers from NewsGuard and NPR tested various AI models using 30 queries based on false claims originating from China, Iran, and Russia.

On average, AI chatbots successfully identified and refuted misinformation approximately 75% of the time. For instance, when presented with false Russian claims regarding the bombing of a Ukrainian monastery, models like Google’s Gemini correctly identified the premise as incorrect and noted it as part of a disinformation campaign. Digital literacy experts noted that this level of accuracy is a positive indicator for the technology's role in combating false narratives.
