Vietnam Airlines launches weight-reduction initiative to cut emissions

Vietnam Airlines has launched the “Light Flight to Hue” program on flight VN7545 from Hanoi to Hue, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The initiative aims to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions by minimizing the aircraft's total takeoff weight through various operational and passenger-led measures.

Operational strategies implemented for the flight included cleaning aircraft engines to improve efficiency, optimizing flight routes based on weather conditions, calculating precise water requirements to avoid excess weight, and utilizing lighter cargo containers.

Passengers contributed to the environmental goals by using online check-in or biometric identification to reduce paper waste, optimizing baggage weight, and using personal cups to limit single-use plastics. According to the airline, over 90% of passengers on the flight utilized digital check-in methods. Dang Anh Tuan, Deputy General Director of Vietnam Airlines, noted that while these changes are small, their cumulative effect across multiple flights can significantly reduce environmental impact.
