Vietnam Airlines secures $2.9 bn US EXIM financing guarantee for 50 Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets

Vietnam Airlines has obtained a preliminary commitment from the United States Export‑Import Bank (EXIM) for financing of more than $2.9 billion. The guarantee will support the airline’s plan to acquire 50 Boeing 737 MAX 8 narrow‑body aircraft, with delivery slated for 2030‑2032.

The financing arrangement marks the first time a Vietnamese carrier has received EXIM export‑credit support for aircraft purchases, building on earlier US‑backed projects for Boeing 777 and 787 Dreamliner fleets. EXIM’s involvement is intended to give Vietnam Airlines access to international capital at competitive terms and diversify its funding sources. The bank also indicated willingness to assist with other US‑sourced projects, such as aircraft engines, maintenance, repair and overhaul facilities.

The new fleet is expected to operate on domestic and regional Asian routes, supporting the airline’s long‑term development goals of reaching roughly 168 million passengers and over 2.25 million tonnes of cargo within five years. The modern 737 MAX 8 jets are positioned to improve fuel efficiency and lower emissions as Vietnam’s aviation sector pursues greener operations.
