Vietnam and Belgium deepen parliamentary cooperation

Vietnam’s senior parliamentary delegation, led by Lieutenant General Le Tan Toi, met with First Vice President of the Belgian Senate Andries Gryffroy in Brussels on July 10. The officials agreed to expand parliamentary ties, establishing a Vietnam‑Belgium Parliamentary Friendship Group and increasing exchanges of delegations and committee cooperation.

Both sides highlighted opportunities to boost trade and investment, citing sectors such as logistics, high‑tech agriculture, food safety, semiconductors, clean energy, environmental technology and green finance. Belgium welcomed the Vietnamese proposal to fully implement the EU‑Vietnam Free Trade Agreement, ratify the EU‑Vietnam Investment Protection Agreement, and remove the EU’s “yellow card” warning on Vietnamese seafood exports. The discussion also covered joint work on cybersecurity, transnational crime, climate‑change mitigation and post‑war legacy issues.

The meeting underscored Belgium’s ongoing support for Vietnam, including a 2023 parliamentary resolution recognizing Vietnamese victims of Agent Orange. Both parties expressed intent to further strengthen Vietnam‑EU relations through legislative collaboration and economic cooperation.
