Canada expands strategic partnerships with EU and Vietnam
Canada is strengthening its strategic ties with both the European Union and Vietnam. The European Union is seeking to build an ‘alliance for the future’ with Canada, potentially establishing Canada as its first ‘associated member’ to enhance strategic autonomy and resource resilience, particularly regarding critical minerals.
Simultaneously, Vietnam and Canada have elevated their relationship to a strategic partnership following a state visit by Vietnamese General Secretary To Lam. This new framework focuses on eight pillars, including digital technology, AI, energy security, and maritime cooperation. The visit resulted in several memorandums of understanding regarding energy, maritime transport, and food security.
In Africa, Vietnam and South Africa are also working to expand economic potential. Following a business forum in Cape Town, both nations are targeting increased cooperation in manufacturing, technology, and mineral processing to leverage their complementary strengths.
