Vietnam and Chile celebrate 55 years of diplomatic relations

The Vietnamese Embassy in Santiago hosted a ceremony to commemorate the 81st anniversary of Vietnam's National Day and the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and Chile. The event was attended by high-ranking officials, including Chilean Deputy Foreign Minister Patricio Torres Espinosa, Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies Ximena Ossandón Irarrázabal, and Army Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Guillermo Altamirano Campos.

During the ceremony, Vietnamese Ambassador Nguyễn Việt Cường highlighted the historical significance of the relationship, noting that Chile was the first South American nation to establish diplomatic ties with Vietnam in 1971. He emphasized that despite the geographic distance, both nations are united by a shared commitment to global integration and openness.

Key milestones in the bilateral relationship include the signing of a bilateral free trade agreement—the first between Vietnam and a Latin American country—and their shared status as founding members of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). The Ambassador noted that President Lương Cường’s visit to Chile in November 2024 has initiated a new phase of development for the two nations.
