Vietnam and China expand international railway logistics

Vietnam is enhancing its international logistics capabilities through new railway routes, most notably the Qinghai (China) to Dong Nai (Vietnam) container transport line. Spanning nearly 4,000 km, the route covers approximately 2,178 km in China and over 1,700 km in Vietnam.

The new service has significantly reduced transit times. The journey from Qinghai to the Trang Bom station in Dong Nai now takes approximately seven days, including customs clearance, compared to the previous 12 to 15 days. This efficiency is driven by direct, continuous railway services and a policy to move border operations further into the interior of Vietnam.

International railway freight volumes have shown substantial growth, reaching 1.15 million tons in 2024 (a 43% increase from 2023) and exceeding 1.4 million tons in 2025 (a 23% increase). These developments aim to establish a trans-Asian railway corridor connecting Vietnam with China, Central Asia, and Europe, while also promoting bidirectional freight to ensure efficient wagon utilization.
