Vietnam and France strengthen Comprehensive Strategic Partnership

During an official visit to France from September 10-11, 2026, Vietnamese General Secretary and President Tô Lâm met with French President Emmanuel Macron to advance the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations. The leaders issued a Joint Statement to implement this framework, establishing an Action Plan for the 2026-2028 period.

The partnership focuses on 14 priority areas, including defense, security, trade, science, technology, energy, and health. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to multilateralism, an open international trade system, and a rules-based international order, emphasizing cooperation with partners in the EU and ASEAN.

During the visit, President Macron awarded Tô Lâm the Grand Cross of the Legion of Honor, France's highest national distinction. Additionally, France returned a Dong Son bronze drum to Vietnam as part of a commitment to combat the illegal trafficking of cultural property. Tô Lâm also attended the Space Summit in Paris and met with the Vietnamese community and embassy staff to discuss strengthening intellectual and economic ties.
