Vietnam and France summit focuses on next-generation vaccine technology

A high-level summit between Vietnam and France was held in Hanoi on July 9, 2026, to strengthen cooperation in developing next-generation vaccine technologies. Building on the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations, the summit aims to transition Vietnam from a reliance on external vaccine supplies to establishing domestic production capabilities and mastering advanced biotechnologies.

Participants discussed the necessity of moving beyond simple product acquisition toward building long-term capacity and integrating into the global high-tech vaccine value chain. Key technological focuses include mRNA, viral vectors, and recombinant proteins.

Ta Manh Hung, Deputy Director of the Drug Administration under the Ministry of Health, noted that while Vietnam has successfully transferred technology for over 30 original brand-name drugs, a significant gap remains in high-tech vaccines. He identified institutional and infrastructural bottlenecks that require breakthrough international cooperation to resolve.
