Vietnam and Germany discuss technology transfer for high-speed rail

A delegation from Vietnam’s Ministry of Construction, led by Deputy Minister Bui Xuan Dung, met with German authorities and major industry leaders to discuss cooperation and technology transfer for the North-South high-speed railway project. The meetings included representatives from the German Federal Ministry of Transport, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Siemens Mobility, Deutsche Bahn (DB), and the German Railway Industry Association (VDB).

The North-South high-speed railway is a key national project approved by the Vietnamese National Assembly. The planned line spans approximately 1,541 km with a design speed of 350 km/h, featuring 23 passenger stations and 5 freight stations. The project is expected to be largely completed by 2035.

Vietnam is currently in a critical phase of preparing the project’s feasibility study. Deputy Minister Dung emphasized the importance of selecting modern, safe, and efficient technology that is compatible with local conditions while controlling lifecycle costs. Vietnam is specifically seeking to build independent operational and maintenance capacities, develop human resources, and ensure system interoperability to avoid dependence on a single supplier.
