Vietnam and Myanmar agree to deepen defence and economic ties

Vietnam and Myanmar have agreed to deepen their defence and economic cooperation following an official visit by Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing to Hanoi. During talks with Vietnamese leader To Lam, the two nations identified the defence and security sector as a key pillar of their bilateral relationship.

Key areas of military cooperation include training, officer exchanges, search-and-rescue operations, and disaster response. Both sides pledged to enhance information sharing to combat crime and committed to ensuring their territories are not used by third parties to conduct activities against one another.

Economically, the leaders sought to expand trade and investment in sectors such as high-tech agriculture, telecommunications, digital transformation, energy, and transport infrastructure. The two countries also reaffirmed their commitment to peace and freedom of navigation in the South China Sea and pledged closer coordination within ASEAN and Mekong subregional frameworks.
