Vietnam and Myanmar leaders strengthen defense and economic ties

During an official visit to Hanoi from September 4 to 6, Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing met with Vietnamese leaders, including President Tô Lâm and Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng, to strengthen bilateral ties.

The discussions focused on enhancing cooperation in defense and security, specifically targeting transnational crimes such as drug trafficking, human trafficking, cybercrime, and online fraud. Both nations agreed to expand military training programs and facilitate exchanges between young officers.

On the economic front, Vietnam expressed support for Myanmar’s stability and economic growth. The leaders explored expanding trade, investment, and connectivity. Myanmar encouraged Vietnamese investment in sectors including telecommunications, digital transformation, high-tech agriculture, aquaculture, and infrastructure. Both parties also discussed improving air connectivity and restoring direct flights to bolster commerce and tourism.
