Vietnam and Philippines coordinate to stabilize rice trade

A Vietnamese interdisciplinary delegation, led by the Ministry of Industry and Trade, recently visited the Philippines to address obstacles in rice trade and promote bilateral cooperation. The mission, which took place from August 19 to 21, 2026, focused on resolving issues arising from the Philippines' initiation of a safeguard investigation into imported rice.

During meetings with the Philippine Department of Agriculture, Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Foreign Affairs, and the Tariff Commission, both nations reaffirmed the importance of their Enhanced Strategic Partnership. The Philippines recognized Vietnam as a stable and reliable rice supplier essential for its national food security and market stability.

The Philippine Department of Trade and Industry noted that the Tariff Commission conducts the safeguard investigation through an independent quasi-judicial mechanism. Officials stated the process would be objective, fair, and transparent, adhering to World Trade Organization (WTO) standards and the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement (ATIGA). Both countries agreed to continue implementing their Memorandum of Understanding on rice trade cooperation to maintain a stable supply chain.
