Vietnam faces Singapore in AFF Cup 2026 showdown
Singapore’s coach Gavin Lee says his side will prepare thoroughly for the clash with defending champions Vietnam at My Dinh stadium, acknowledging that Vietnam will not be an easy opponent. Singapore entered the AFF Cup 2026 group stage with two victories – 2‑1 over Cambodia and 2‑0 over Timor Leste – giving them six points and the lead in Group A.
Vietnam opened the tournament with a dominant 7‑0 win over Timor Leste, also sitting on six points. Coach Kim Sang‑sik must decide whether to field his strongest XI to secure the top spot or conserve player stamina for the later knockout rounds, as the schedule is congested.
Singapore’s tactical approach relies on direct, high‑ball play and aerial advantage, fielding several tall players such as defender Irfan Fandi (1.89 m), Lionel Tan and Jacob Mahner. Vietnam is advised to guard against lofted crosses and set‑piece threats that could exploit Singapore’s height on both attack and defence.
