Vietnam and United States deepen defense cooperation

On 5 August in Hanoi, General Nguyễn Tân Cương, Chief of the General Staff and Deputy Minister of Defence of Vietnam, met with Admiral Samuel Paparo, commander of the U.S. Indo‑Pacific Command. The two sides reaffirmed their commitment to expand defence cooperation, stressing work on war‑legacy remediation, medical services, joint training, United Nations peace‑keeping, defence‑industry collaboration, humanitarian assistance and the search for missing U.S. personnel.

Vietnam asked the United States to increase funding for the dioxin‑cleanup project at Bien Hoa airbase, seeking an additional $130 million to finish the work before 2031. In parallel, a Vietnamese delegation led by Vice‑Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Manh Cuong hosted U.S. security‑technology firms to discuss cooperation on security industries, strategic technologies and digital transformation, underscoring the broader strategic partnership between the two countries.
