In Hanoi on 5 August, To Lam met U.S. Pacific Command commander Admiral Samuel Paparo and asked the United States to end Section 301 investigations and limit extreme trade‑defence measures. Australia has already upgraded its ties with Vietnam to the highest tier in 2024, and the New Zealand visit marks the first state visit by a Vietnamese President since 2007.
