Vietnam implements 2G shutdown, Starlink deployment, and retirement age adjustments

Vietnam is implementing several significant technological and regulatory shifts. In the telecommunications sector, the country is set to officially shut down 2G networks nationwide on September 15, 2026. This move aims to modernize infrastructure and reallocate frequency resources for 4G and 5G networks. To address connectivity gaps in remote, mountainous, and island regions where traditional fiber or mobile signals are weak, the Telecommunications Authority has partnered with Starlink Services Vietnam to distribute 254 Starlink Standard 4X satellite internet kits to 13 provinces.

In terms of labor and social policy, the retirement age for workers in normal conditions will continue to increase according to the 2019 Labor Code and Decree 135/2020/NĐ-CP. By 2027, the retirement age is projected to reach 61 years and 9 months for men and 57 years and 4 months for women, following a roadmap that aims for 62 for men by 2028 and 60 for women by 2035.

Additionally, regulations regarding electronic identification (VNeID) are expanding. New provisions allow foreigners legally residing or entering Vietnam to register for electronic identification accounts, facilitating easier access to public services and administrative procedures.
