Bac Ninh to become Vietnam's ninth centrally‑run city

The Politburo of the Communist Party of Vietnam unanimously approved a resolution (Conclusion No. 52‑KL/TW, signed by Standing Secretary Trần Cẩm Tú on 20 June 2026) to elevate Bac Ninh province to a centrally‑run city based on its current administrative boundaries. The decision follows the provincial request submitted on 19 May 2026 and will be presented to the Party Central Committee for final approval once the required documentation, including I‑type city recognition files, is completed.

The new city is slated to serve as a model of a green, smart, modern and culturally distinct urban centre. Priorities include developing a high‑tech electronics hub focused on semiconductors, micro‑chips and artificial intelligence, integrating fully into global supply chains, and expanding multimodal logistics. The Politburo also emphasized simultaneous upgrades to road, waterway, rail and air infrastructure and the creation of a compact, professional municipal administration that safeguards national defence, security and public order. Bac Ninh will join the existing eight centrally‑run cities—Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, Da Nang, Hue, Can Tho and Dong Nai—and will become the ninth following Quang Ninh.
