Vietnam arrests three individuals on terrorism and forgery charges
Vietnamese authorities have arrested and charged three individuals with terrorism and forgery, sparking an international dispute regarding the circumstances of their capture. The detainees, identified as Nguyen Duc Thuan (a Norwegian citizen), Ho Pham Hiep Huy (also known as Tran Hiep, an Australian citizen), and Thai Cong Truong Son, were apprehended on September 18 near the My Quy Tay border gate in Tay Ninh province.
The Ministry of Public Security claims the three men were attempting to enter Vietnam illegally from Cambodia using forged documents. Authorities allege the group is linked to Viet Tan, an opposition organization that the Vietnamese government classifies as a terrorist group. The suspects face charges under the Penal Code for terrorism and the falsification of seals and documents.
In contrast, Viet Tan has issued a statement claiming that two of its members were abducted in Cambodia and forcibly transferred into Vietnamese territory. The organization disputes the terrorism classification and asserts that the individuals lost contact in Cambodia before being taken. The conflicting accounts raise significant questions regarding whether the incident was a standard border arrest or an extrajudicial operation conducted across international borders.
