Vietnamese General Secretary and President To Lam conducted a state visit to Australia from August 9 to 12, 2026, marking a significant milestone in the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations. During meetings with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Governor-General Sam Mostyn, leaders agreed to deepen cooperation across multiple sectors, including defense, security, and technology.

Key defense and security agreements include expanding maritime security cooperation and joint training exercises, particularly in response to regional stability concerns in the South China Sea. The two nations also pledged to combat transnational organized crime and people smuggling. In the economic sphere, both sides emphasized building resilient supply chains for critical minerals, semiconductors, and clean energy.

Bilateral trade remains strong, with two-way trade reaching 8.1 billion USD in the first half of 2026, a nearly 22% increase year-on-year. Vietnam's exports to Australia rose by over 25% during the same period. Additionally, a new Memorandum of Understanding on Agriculture and Sustainable Development was signed to enhance cooperation in fisheries, forestry, and food safety. The visit also highlighted educational and technological ties, including the expansion of RMIT University in Vietnam and the launch of Phase 2 of the Vietnam-Australia Centre.
