Vietnam borehole water safety guidelines for families

In Vietnam, borehole water serves as a primary domestic water source for an estimated 30% to 60% of the population, depending on the region. However, this water source is highly susceptible to contamination from natural and man-made factors, including heavy metals such as iron, manganese, and arsenic, as well as bacteria and pesticides.

To ensure safety, experts recommend several preventative measures:

1. Periodic testing: Families should have water samples tested at least once a year by medical prevention centers or certified laboratories to check for pH levels, heavy metals, and microbiological indicators like E. coli.

2. Filtration systems: Depending on test results, households should invest in appropriate filtration. Sand filters using quartz sand, activated carbon, and manganese sand can help remove sediment and odors. For direct drinking water, Reverse Osmosis (RO) systems are necessary to eliminate microscopic impurities and toxins.

3. Maintenance: Regular cleaning and maintenance of wells and storage tanks, such as suctioning out accumulated silt every 2 to 3 years or after flood seasons, are essential for hygiene.
