Vietnam Cancer Experts Call for Targeted Testing Over Quantity

Dr. Pham Xuan Dũng, vice‑president of the Vietnam Cancer Society, said at a July 31 conference in Ho Chi Minh City that cancer diagnosis should be individualized. The goal is to choose the right test for each patient and disease stage, rather than ordering as many examinations as possible. He warned against over‑testing and stressed evaluating the true clinical value of each technique, noting that newer technologies are not automatically beneficial for every case.

He added that accurate diagnosis is only the first step; multidisciplinary treatment (MDT) models are being introduced across Vietnamese hospitals and can extend patient survival by roughly 15 months. Genetic factors also play a key role, with rare gene mutations guiding therapy for advanced lung cancer. Vietnam aims to master next‑generation biotechnology and gene‑editing by 2045, supporting more precise cancer care.
