Vietnam auto market reshaped by Thaco, Toyota and VinFast as they pivot to hybrids and SUVs

Vietnam's automotive sector is undergoing a major restructuring. Thaco Auto has introduced ten new models in a single month, added distribution rights for Jeep, RAM and Mazda, and is focusing on hybrid powertrains to fill market gaps. The company plans further launches, including new CX-5 and CX-50 variants, and aims to launch a sub‑brand with affordable hybrid vehicles by 2027.

Toyota Vietnam has streamlined its lineup, ending sales of the Corolla Altis, gasoline‑only Camry and diesel‑engine Fortuner. The firm is shifting resources to core segments, promoting hybrid versions such as the Camry HEV Premium and expanding its SUV cross range (Corolla Cross, Yaris Cross, Innova Cross, Veloz Cross) while preparing a new Land Cruiser FJ diesel model.

VinFast is also adjusting its portfolio, separating service‑oriented models from passenger vehicles as part of the broader market realignment.

In the two‑wheel segment, Honda Vietnam launched the electric scooter UC3 at a price near VND 56‑58 million after a VND 22 million discount, almost VND 50 million cheaper than the Thai market. The offering includes a powerful 1,200 W handheld charger to encourage early adoption of electric mobility.
