Vietnam Circus integrates technology with traditional art
The circus production ‘Son Than Thuy Quai’ has become a significant phenomenon in Vietnam, consistently selling out the 1,200-seat Central Circus venue since its premiere on September 25. The performance represents a modern evolution of the ‘Son Tinh - Thuy Tinh’ story, which was previously staged by the Central Circus two decades ago.
The production integrates traditional circus skills—such as precision, strength, and physical discipline—with modern technology, including advanced lighting, music, and projection mapping. This approach aligns with efforts by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to implement digital transformation and innovation within cultural institutions like theaters and museums.
People's Artist Tong Toan Thang emphasizes that while technology expands the stage, the core values of circus artistry must remain central. He advocates for using Vietnamese folklore and cultural stories as the foundation for performances, aiming to create a unique national identity that can eventually reach international audiences.
