Vietnam coastal regions prioritize sustainable aquaculture and mangrove protection

Coastal regions in Vietnam are focusing on balancing economic development with environmental preservation through sustainable aquaculture and mangrove protection.

In Quảng Ngãi, specifically in Tịnh Khê commune, authorities are promoting the replanting of mangrove forests to serve as a “green shield.” These forests, covering over 26 hectares, protect against erosion and saltwater intrusion while supporting local livelihoods. Previous attempts at spontaneous shrimp farming led to deforestation and environmental degradation, prompting a shift toward protecting the ecosystem to ensure long-term stability.

In Thanh Hóa, the focus is on modernizing the shrimp industry. Farmers are transitioning from traditional methods to high-tech, intensive, and super-intensive white-leg shrimp farming using greenhouses and net houses. This technological shift aims to increase productivity and income while mitigating the impacts of climate change and pollution, aligning with national resolutions to develop a modern and sustainable maritime economy.
