Vietnam considers electricity price cuts and zero petrol excise tax
Vietnam is considering significant reductions in energy and fuel costs to support citizens and businesses. During a meeting led by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Van Thang, the government directed Vietnam Electricity (EVN) to maximize cost savings to develop a plan for reducing average retail electricity prices. This reduction is proposed to take effect from November 1, 2026, through March 31, 2027.
Simultaneously, the Ministry of Finance is reviewing the feasibility of reducing the special consumption tax on all types of gasoline to 0% for the same period. These measures aim to ensure social welfare and mitigate the impact of previous price increases on the economy.
Additionally, the Ministry of Industry and Trade is proposing a restructuring of residential electricity tariffs, moving from a six-tier to a five-tier system. Under this new structure, the first tier would be expanded to cover the first 100 kWh. Officials estimate that approximately 94% of residential customers, specifically those consuming 800 kWh or less per month, could see a decrease in their electricity bills under this new framework.
