Vietnam container freight rates surge to near $9,000 per container

The Vietnam Container Freight Index rose 11.9% in the week of June 29–July 5, reaching 3,449.5 points and pushing average container costs to $4,862. Freight on routes from Ho Chi Minh City to the United States jumped sharply: the West‑Coast service rose 18.9% to $7,214 per 40‑foot container, while the East‑Coast route climbed 16.7% to $8,849, its highest level in the index. Compared with three months earlier, US‑bound rates have more than doubled, marking the steepest weekly gain among the 13 routes tracked.

Exporters are accelerating shipments ahead of a U.S. tariff deadline on July 24, creating a surge in demand for vessel space and allowing carriers to raise prices. The higher freight costs pressure exporters, especially those with fixed‑price contracts and perishable goods, who may have to absorb the added expense.

European routes also saw price increases but at a slower pace, reflecting continued rerouting around the Red Sea and Suez Canal due to security concerns. Phaata forecasts a modest easing of rates next week, with a projected 2.1% decline for Northern Europe and 3.7% for Mediterranean services. The firm advises exporters to prioritize short‑term freight contracts and secure space early for critical shipments.
