Vietnam deepens policy cooperation with the IMF as new resident representative appointed

Vietnam’s Ministry of Finance hosted a meeting in Hanoi reaffirming the country’s partnership with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Finance Minister Tuan thanked outgoing IMF resident Jochen Schmittmann for three years of support and welcomed Fazurin Jamaludin, the newly appointed IMF resident for Vietnam and Laos, emphasizing continued dialogue on macro‑economic management, fiscal policy and tax administration.

Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng also met the IMF representatives, describing the Fund as a trusted strategic adviser and a vital bridge for Vietnam’s socioeconomic development. He highlighted the recently approved 2026‑2030 development plan, which targets an average annual GDP growth of at least 10 % and aims to place Vietnam among the world’s 30 largest economies. Recent data showed an 8.18 % growth rate in the first half of 2026, a five‑year high of US$13.03 billion in foreign direct investment, and strong recovery in domestic consumption and tourism. Both officials stressed the importance of disciplined policymaking, structural reforms and ongoing IMF support to achieve these goals.
