Vietnam Department of Roads advances digital transport transformation
The Vietnam Department of Roads has reported progress in its digital transformation plan, completing 9 out of 15 assigned tasks within its first 100 days of implementation. Key achievements include the synchronization of road infrastructure data with the Ministry of Construction’s shared database, with road route data reaching 91.73%, bridge data at 84.23%, and tunnel data at 100%. The Department is also advising on a plan to build an intelligent road transport management system for the 2026-2030 period.
Director Bui Quang Thai emphasized that digital transformation must be measured by practical results, such as real-world data and operational efficiency, rather than just the quantity of software or equipment deployed.
To advance Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), experts suggest Vietnam must move beyond simple camera installation toward sophisticated data analysis. While international models in cities like Stockholm and London use travel demand data to manage congestion and planning, Vietnam faces unique challenges due to high motorcycle volumes and dense networks of small alleys. Developers like Viettel ITS are focusing on understanding movement patterns between areas to improve traffic organization rather than just addressing immediate congestion points.
