Vĩnh Long prepares 10.8 trillion VND for El Niño response
Vĩnh Long province has developed three response scenarios to address potential drought and saltwater intrusion caused by the El Niño phenomenon during the 2026–2027 dry season. The proposed scenarios range from average annual levels to conditions mirroring the historic saltwater intrusion of 2020.
To mitigate these risks, the province plans to implement various engineering and non-engineering solutions with an estimated total budget of over 10.8 trillion VND. Proposed infrastructure projects include the construction of three temporary dams at the Ba Lai River and specific freshwater diversion channels.
In addition to physical works, the province will focus on enhancing water monitoring, forecasting, and early warning systems. Authorities aim to operate irrigation systems more effectively and proactively store freshwater to ensure a stable supply for both agricultural production and domestic use.
