Vietnam driver contests false AI seatbelt violation

A driver in Yen Bai, Vietnam, recently faced a false traffic violation notice via the VNeTraffic app for failing to wear a seatbelt. The error occurred because the driver's clothing color closely matched the cream-colored padding on the seatbelt, causing the AI-powered camera system to fail to recognize the belt.

After reporting the discrepancy to the police in Phu Tho, the driver provided photographic evidence to prove the belt was in use. Authorities confirmed the error and stated the violation would be removed from the system within 3 to 10 days. This incident highlights potential limitations in AI recognition when colors blend, a phenomenon also reported in other regions like Bengaluru, India.

In light of such errors and the risk of accumulating multiple undetected fines, authorities recommend that motorists regularly check the VNeTraffic application. According to regulations, police have a 10-day window from the discovery of a violation to verify and update information on official platforms, but updates may not appear instantaneously.
