Vietnam durian gains market entry to India's 1.4 billion‑person market

The Indian government has formally approved the import of fresh durian from Vietnam, removing extra phytosanitary requirements and special import conditions. Under the revised Plant Quarantine Order (S. O. 3828(E) 2026), Vietnam is now on the list of countries permitted to export fresh durian to India, a market of more than 1.4 billion consumers.

Vietnam's durian export sector, worth over US$1 billion in the first half of 2026, has been dominated by China, which accounts for about 91% of total value. The new access to India is seen as a key step to diversify export destinations, reduce dependence on a single market, and sustain growth. Officials expect initial sales to focus on high‑end retail in major Indian cities, requiring exporters to study consumer preferences, product specifications, logistics and distribution channels.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Vietnam will cooperate with Indian authorities and industry bodies to guide enterprises through the new procedures and address any challenges that arise, aiming to expand the sector toward a target of US$4.5 billion in annual exports.
