Vietnam durian industry expands access to China and India markets
Vietnam's durian industry is expanding its reach into major global markets, specifically China and India. In China, representatives from China Coop emphasized the growing demand for high-quality durian. Discussions focused on moving beyond simple trade toward building sustainable, long-term supply chains. This involves standardizing production at the farm level—including seed selection, cultivation, and pest control—as well as investing in cold chain logistics and traceability to ensure food safety and consumer trust.
Simultaneously, India has officially opened its market to fresh Vietnamese durian following an amendment to its plant quarantine regulations. This development is expected to help the Vietnamese durian industry diversify its export destinations and reduce reliance on traditional markets, with a potential annual export value target of $4.5 to $5 billion. Experts suggest that while initial demand in India will likely concentrate in major urban centers and high-end retail, there is significant long-term potential for frozen and processed durian products in India, North America, and the Middle East.
