Vietnam elderly fall victim to vacation‑ownership contract scams

A VTV investigative documentary series titled “Cạm bẫy từ các hợp đồng kỳ nghỉ” revealed how fraudsters sell so‑called vacation‑ownership contracts to senior citizens. The scheme promises long‑term resort stays and the potential to rent or resell the rights, targeting older people who seek a secure, comfortable retirement.

Investigations showed many retirees invested large sums, sometimes borrowing money or selling their homes, only to discover the contracts were deceptive. Victims were lured by polished presentations in upscale hotels, with sales staff dressed in formal attire and using emotionally persuasive language that exploited the elderly’s loneliness and desire for family connection. The fallout includes severe financial loss, debt, and loss of property, as well as emotional distress for the victims and their families.

Following the broadcast, public outrage surged on social media, with numerous people sharing personal experiences of being approached by similar schemes. The exposé has sparked calls for stronger consumer protection for seniors and greater scrutiny of vacation‑ownership businesses in Vietnam.
