Vietnam Electricity Company EVN warns of meter replacement scam

The Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) announced that fraudsters are impersonating employees of the Ho Chi Minh City Electricity Corporation (EVNHCMC) to contact customers. The scammers claim to schedule electronic electricity‑meter replacements and demand illegal payments ranging from a few hundred thousand to several million dong, citing reasons such as “fees for a new meter” or “installation labor costs.” Some victims are asked to transfer deposits to personal bank accounts, and in more severe cases, impostors have removed old meters and installed unverified devices to collect cash.

EVN clarified that periodic meter replacements or upgrades from mechanical to electronic meters are performed entirely free of charge. Customers must not make any payments for meter changes and should verify any scheduling information through official EVNHCMC channels, including the hot‑line 1900 54 54 54, the company's verified Facebook and Zalo pages, the EVNHCMC mobile application, or the national public service portal. The utility urges the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious requests.

This warning aims to protect consumers from financial loss and to curb the spread of the impersonation fraud targeting electricity customers across Vietnam.
