Vietnam emerges as a long-term strategic global manufacturing hub

Vietnam is transitioning from a low-cost manufacturing alternative to a long-term strategic hub within global supply chains. According to the Asia Manufacturing Index 2026, the country has reached third place, signaling its evolution beyond a mere backup option in the ‘China Plus One’ strategy.

Experts highlight several drivers for this shift, including geographic advantages due to its proximity to China, a young and skilled workforce, and extensive trade agreements. Investment firm VanEck notes that multinational corporations are increasingly choosing Vietnam based on logistics reliability and total cost optimization rather than just cheap labor.

However, challenges remain. HSBC representatives suggest that to maintain sustainable competitiveness, Vietnam must address bottlenecks regarding the movement of capital, data, and trust throughout the supplier ecosystem. Strengthening supply chain financing and establishing reliable commercial data systems are identified as critical next steps for the nation's economic integration.
