Vietnam emerges as fastest-growing destination for Australian travelers

Vietnam has become the fastest-growing overseas destination for Australian travelers, according to the October 2026 Travel Trends report from the Australian Travel Industry Association (ATIA). In the 12 months leading up to August 2026, trips to Vietnam from Australia grew by 17.4%, reaching approximately 588,490 trips.

This growth rate significantly outpaced other major destinations, including China (13.1%), Japan (8.1%), India (5.3%), and Indonesia (3.2%). While Indonesia remains a higher-volume destination, Vietnam’s rapid expansion suggests a shift in preference toward diverse and affordable Asian travel options.

In August 2026 alone, Vietnam saw a 30.3% year-on-year increase in trips from Australia. The data, sourced from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), indicates that Vietnam is rapidly closing the gap with long-haul markets like the United Kingdom, which recorded 588,550 trips during the same period.
