Vietnam emphasizes multilateralism at UN General Assembly

During the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, Vietnamese General Secretary and President To Lam delivered a speech emphasizing independence, self-reliance, and multilateralism. The address highlighted Vietnam’s proactive role within the Global South as the international order faces shifts in major power competition, economic challenges, and technological advancements.

Experts note that Vietnam’s message focused on restoring international trust, promoting equitable development, and ensuring that technological progress does not create new global divides. The speech also called for competition between powers to avoid confrontation and advocated for the peaceful settlement of disputes.

Vietnam is increasingly moving from participating in international mechanisms to actively shaping global agendas. Recent examples of this evolving role include hosting the signing ceremony for the UN Convention against Cybercrime and preparations to host APEC 2027.
