Vietnam expands diplomatic outreach and aid after deadly tourist canoe crash

Vietnam's government responded to a serious waterway accident on July 11 off Phu Quoc Island when a tourist canoe carrying 32 Indian visitors capsized, killing 15. Prime Minister Le Minh Hung ordered an urgent response, offered condolences to Indian President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and called for the creation of an elite, professional international search‑and‑rescue force.

The country also dispatched humanitarian aid to earthquake‑stricken Venezuela, expressing solidarity and gratitude for the assistance received. Vietnamese leaders highlighted ongoing initiatives such as expanding primary and secondary boarding schools in 248 border communes, enhancing prison‑management reforms, and accelerating the 500‑day campaign to locate and identify martyrs’ remains.

Vietnam deepened its international partnerships: a comprehensive strategic partnership with France, defence cooperation with Japan, military‑academy exchanges with China, and a pledge to elevate the Vietnam‑US strategic partnership. Additional diplomatic engagements included strengthening ties with Algeria, supporting Timor‑Leste's ASEAN chairmanship, and sending condolences to Qatar following the former emir’s death.
