Vietnam expands joint research funding with Australia and Russia to boost science, technology and innovation

Vietnam is scaling up international cooperation to strengthen its science, technology and innovation capacity. Under Politburo Resolution No. 57‑NQ/TW, the country launched the 2026 Joint Research Funding Programme with Australia, focusing on renewable and new energy technologies, a sustainable marine economy, and waste recycling and management. The National Foundation for Science and Technology Development (NAFOSTED) will manage the programme, enabling joint research teams and shared resources, as highlighted by NAFOSTED Director Dao Ngoc Chien and Australia’s Chief Scientist Tony Haymet.

Vietnam also seeks deeper ties with Russia, with Minister of Science and Technology Vu Hai Quan proposing expanded cooperation in artificial intelligence, quantum technology, space technology and low‑Earth‑orbit satellites. The seventh Vietnam‑Russia Committee on Education, Science and Technology Cooperation is slated for later this year, alongside a conference for young scientists. These initiatives reflect a broader push to mobilise external resources and foster collaborative projects across strategic emerging technologies.
