Vietnam expands VNeID digital identity app capabilities

Vietnam is expanding the utility of its national digital identification app, VNeID, through new regulations affecting both the gaming industry and vehicle management.

Starting November 15, casino and electronic gaming operators will have the option to verify customer identities using the VNeID app. While this provides an additional verification method, operators are not required to use it and may continue to rely on traditional identity documents. Businesses must still maintain comprehensive customer registers and ensure that ineligible players are blocked from participating. Additionally, new rules prohibit gaming businesses from hiring individuals with unexpunged convictions related to gambling or loan-sharking.

In a separate development effective October 26, the VNeID app has introduced a feature for vehicle registration management. Citizens with level 2 electronic identification accounts can now integrate their vehicle registration data into the app’s digital wallet. This feature aims to digitize registration data for easier online management, though authorities clarified that it does not replace the physical inspection process at registration centers.
