Vietnam experts call for early investment in doctoral researchers

Experts in Vietnam are advocating for early investment in scientific talent, emphasizing that support for researchers must begin during the doctoral student stage rather than waiting for recruitment periods. Associate Professor Dr. Dang Hong Son suggests that providing scholarships, research conditions, and clear career paths to PhD candidates is essential for building a sustainable scientific workforce.

Following Resolution No. 71-NQ/TW regarding breakthroughs in education and training, policies to attract talent and support postgraduate studies are being prioritized. While Decree No. 179/2026/ND-CP provides scholarships for basic sciences, key engineering, and strategic technologies, investment levels vary across disciplines. Social sciences and humanities currently lack widespread dedicated support, often relying on tuition waivers or project-based funding.

To address this, some institutions, such as the University of Social Sciences and Humanities at Vietnam National University, Hanoi, have implemented proactive talent cultivation programs. These programs include 100% tuition coverage—approximately 50 million VND per year—alongside support for living expenses, research, and international academic publications.
