Vietnam experts propose updates to Food Safety Law

Experts and scientists met in Hanoi to provide feedback on the proposed amendments to Vietnam’s 2010 Food Safety Law. The workshop, organized by the Vietnam Union of Science and Technology Associations and the Vietnam Association for Food Safety Science and Technology, emphasized the need for modernizing food safety governance to address evolving production methods and the rapid growth of e-commerce.

Key recommendations include implementing risk-based management, where inspection resources are allocated according to the specific risk levels of different product groups rather than using a uniform approach. Participants also stressed the importance of strengthening post-inspection mechanisms, enhancing the capacity to detect and warn of risks, and ensuring oversight throughout the entire production, circulation, and consumption chain.

Furthermore, the experts highlighted the necessity of digital transformation and improved traceability. This involves fostering data sharing between regulatory agencies and supply chain actors to create a transparent information system capable of early warning and efficient product recalls to protect consumer rights.
