Vietnam faces high liver cancer rates due to Hepatitis B and alcohol use

Vietnam faces high rates of liver cancer incidence and mortality, ranking as the third highest in the world for males, following only Mongolia and Laos, according to World Health Organization statistics. In Vietnam, liver cancer is the most common cancer among men and the fifth most common among women.

During a scientific forum organized by Phuong Dong General Hospital, Professor Mai Trong Khoa, former Deputy Director of Bach Mai Hospital, identified several contributing factors. These include high rates of Hepatitis B infection, excessive alcohol consumption, environmental toxins, and unsafe food consumption.

While various treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and immunotherapy are available, mortality rates remain high because many patients are diagnosed at advanced stages. Experts emphasize that early detection is critical to improving survival rates and reducing the economic burden of treatment.
